Image of the week: Satellites monitored 24/7
Mission control carries on during the holidays
While most people are off for the holidays, the operations team at EUMETSAT continues their work around the clock.
This photo shows the EUMETSAT Low Earth Orbit Mission Control Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, where operations controllers work in shifts to monitor and control three Metop first and second generation satellites, and four Copernicus Sentinel-3 and -6 satellites, at all times of the day and night, year-round.
Their colleagues in the adjacent Geostationary Mission Control Centre keep a watchful eye over a further three Meteosat second generation and two third generation satellites, orbiting at 36,000 km above the Equator.
These dedicated professionals ensure that data continues to flow continuosly, providing users continuously with essential weather, ocean, atmosphere, land and climate observations from satellites.
